capsule
Another find on Xanga, my friend posted a music video for a song so in your face and energetic I was instantly hooked. Plastic Girl was my Plastic Love. Just as so many people became addicted to citypop through Takeuchi's megahit, I was brought into the world of Japanese music in general through this single. It was the complete opposite of the emo and nu metal I was into at the time. Over the years I was amazed at how much music producer Yasutaka Nakata could pump out for capsule and a large number of other artists. Not only did he write the music and lyrics, he would also do the visual design, of which I tried to copy when creating posters for my school club events.
The music leaned towards shibuya-kei and pico-pop in the early years, but after about 2005 the music became more electro dance-pop and EDM type stuff. There are a lot of good tracks on both sides of the spectrum, but they did lose me in the later years. Their music will always remind me of puberty, in all the positive and negative ways you could interpret that.
